Craigdarroch Castle, British Columbia

Craigdarroch Castle is situated in Victoria, British Columbia. This Castle is over 2,300 m and has around 39 rooms and is spread around 28 acres of gardens. It is constructed in the 1800s as a home used by a wealthy family, Robert Dunsmuir and his wife, Joan. Today Craigdarroch Castle is known as one of the most haunted places in Canada.

Story Behind This Place

Craigdarroch Castle was been constructed by a wealthy family, Robert Dunsmuir and his wife, Joan.

However, 17 months before the castle could be constructed, Robert died. And Warren Heywood Williams (he was the first constructor booked to build this place) also died before the finalization of the castle.

After the death of Robert, his sons James and Alexander decided to finish the castle. In 1890, the construction came under Arthur L. Smith, as the first constructor was no more.
The death of Robert Dunsmuir brought the family in a trouble. He left the whole property and business assets to his wife Joan Dunsmuir. Both the sons were disappointed by this as they have worked a lot for their family business.
It is believed that the construction on this castle was around $500,000 and was made from tiles from San Francisco, granite from British Columbia, and an oak staircase manufactured in Chicago.
After the death of Joan Dunsmuir’s, her daughter sold the Craigdarroch Castle to the land investor Griffith Hughes for around $38,000. Later on, Griffith Hughes have spilled the property into the building sets.

Why This Place Is Known as Haunted

It is believed that the Castle is still connected with Dunsmuir’s family. Reported by some people they have seen some spirits haunting this place from that family.
It has been reported that one lady sprit is walking down the main stairs in a ball gown. Most unusual thing is, that sprit is only spotted in that part of the castle, no one has seen her in other parts of that castle.
The Basement of the Castle is also believed to be haunted. It is reported that the spirit of a young girl haunts that place. Some people believed that the girl sprit was the second daughter of Robert Dunsmuir.
Other incidents are reported that there is a sudden fall in the temperature in this place and sometimes the scent of candles is also coming from here.
Some people have also reported that they have heard the sound of the crying child from this place, and the sound of piano also coming from the Dining Room. The creepiest fact is that there is no piano inside the castle.
